Limerick STEAM Carnival 2016! (Click Here for Photos!)

Limerick teachers, students, families, and community members came together for the 2016 STEAM Carnival on Saturday November 19th. The STEAM Carnival was a culminating activity after an 8 week Saturday School STEAM enrichment program. Students utilized the Engineering-Design Process in order to design and examine a carnival game. The students examined the application of concepts such as mass, weight, force, speed, velocity, acceleration, gravity, friction, and the Laws of Motion. In addiction, they examined real world connections to measurement, scale/proportion, and probability. It was a wonderful community event. We thank the Limerick parents, staff, students, and community members for making the event a success! Thank You!

P-22 Day a Huge Success!

P-22 Day a Huge Success
Nearly 100 Limerick Parent, Students, and Staff traveled by bus or car to Griffith Park on Saturday October 22nd for the first annual P-22 Day! Limerick students have been following the story of L.A’s favorite mountain lion, P-22. We have experienced a traveling museum exhibit dedicated to his story and urban wildlife in our community. Students examined evidence of urban wildlife on our school campus in the following categories; plants, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, insects, arachnids, birds, and microscopic organisms-other. Students documented such evidence in the form of photographs, diagrams, and specimen samples. Classes synthesized the results in order to evaluate the quality of our campus urban wildlife habitat. Our conclusion was that, while we do have evidence of many forms of urban wildlife, we lack natural shelter and food sources. This causes wildlife to find shelter in less than natural locations. We would like to explore possible ways to make our campus a much needed connection in the greater Los Angeles area urban wildlife habitat.

Thank you Beth Pratt, CA Director, National Wildlife Federation!

Thank you Beth Pratt!
Limerick 4th and 5th grade students participated in a very special presentation on Monday October 17th. Beth Pratt is the California Director of the National Wildlife Federation. She retold her famous TED Talk called, “How a Lonely Cougar in Los Angeles Inspired the World”. Students learned more about the infamous P-22 mountain lion and had their own questions personally answered by our expert speaker. Additionally, we learned about the tracking of mountain lions like P-22 as well as local coyotes. We examined animal scat, or droppings, in order to get a better idea of the food sources our urban wildlife neighbors have access to. It was an incredibly enriching experience that will never be forgotten.

Limerick Students Travel to Bennu!

Wow! Limerick students are on their way to space! The Osisis-Rex mission is a project between The University of Arizona, Lockheed Martin, and NASA. Students in Mrs. Abergel’s first grade class researched the project for one of their PBL cycles. Our names are etched in foil that will travel to the asteroid Bennu. We, our names, will not be back until 2023! That is a LONG trip!
Any 2nd or 3rd grade student that would like to view the launch from the Kennedy Space Center at lunch on Friday September 9th is welcome. Please join Mrs. Abergel for a Space Launch Lunch in room 52!
